Sick with a cold, tired from < 3 hours of sleep, headache from 8:30 AM exam. I wanted to quit a bunch of times. We're all human.
The best song period today was Anger Storm by Steel Seal. This reduced my headache significantly. Also, my favourite Manowar tracks helped.

On recent events in CT

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the k

iller's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem."

It seems the gym is getting more busy as classes have ended. It's driving me nuts. I feel like everything goes so damn slow that I could sleep in between my sets. The noise. arg. The looks. Arg. The 'music'. ARG.
If it was removed painlessly, I would give up my left nut to just train in peace. No bullshit music, no irritating people, no silly shit. Just give me an empty 2-car garage, and a sizable budget (several thousand dollars) (power rack, a few bars, plates, bench, chalk, sled or prowler or weighted vest) and leave me be.

Doing better, I really got a couple kicks to my ass this weekend. I have started going to the gym earlier, as that allows me to (as shown above) actually complete all of my planned training. From now on I will be more mindful of getting my full planned training sessions in, and avoiding the skipping of any important work. Exams are coming up, and I'm relieved to be done my midterms, assignments and lab work.

My knee is still not healed, so it seems I will need ot be more active in assisting with it's recovery. When I train, it is fine after I warm up enough for the blood to really be flowing. For the 5-10 minutes before that, all squatting and jumps are painful. Also, I tightened my belt a notch today (it's a lever belt).

John Adam Ziolkowski: Attention of Toronto feminists of UofT, regarding ...: Instead of forming a physical wall preventing those interested in civil discussion from getting to a talk... Instead of calling us rap...

From Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/MensRights/comments/13doc7/attention_of_toronto_feminists_of_uoft_regarding/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

"
Just as with the protests against and tearing down of AVFM's "men's rights are human rights" posters, I see the feminist knee-jerk, blind protest of Dr. Farrell's visit as confirmation of something I've been saying about them all along.
They didn't want to hear what he had to say because it didn't matter to their cause. Their cause isn't fighting to right wrongs within the concepts they articulate as women's issues. These concepts are largely inventions of the movement, not to describe real, existing phenomena and circumstances faced by women, but to use as weapons in a gender war against men. Feminists don't fight for rights; they fight for power. The MRM doesn't threaten women's rights; it threatens feminist power.
That is why their response to efforts at promoting gender equality is to spew hatred and vitriol, level false accusations regarding the nature of the movement in general and whatever specific event they're protesting, and deliberately mischaracterize the participants. They cannot tolerate a movement which actually does what they claim as their purpose, because success in that effort would take away from their political power."

Training Notes
Ok day, time ran out quickly as there is only one bench press currently available. The gym administration has finally noticed that there are some bolts loose/missing on one of them. Combine this with 'International Bench Press Day' on Mondays and our training hit a brick wall. I just left to go to class earlier, rather than wait around for a little bit of bench press. It's just bench after all. I wish I hadn't missed deadlifts as well though.
-Aaron

Small Update

I did some measurements last week, and I figured I'd post these so they can be found in the future:
Grip Width Measurements (All in cm) (From the insides of my hands)
Length of clear area on gym's bars: 41
Distance between rings: 81
Deadlift grip: 48
Close Bench grip: 42
Squat grip: 54
Bench grip: 57

Also, I'd like to add bottom position bench pressing to my training, but monday and wednesday are the days where it would need to go, and I rarely complete my training on those days as it is. This is because of distractions in the gym.

Ok day, I sort of mollycoddled myself.
Training
- first set of squats with 315, oh wow pretty heavy and hard
- second, of this is fine!
- rest of squats were great!
- benching went well, everything felt solid
- I was lazy and didn't want to do more close grip work
- deadlifts were good, HERC pushed me to do speed work with 315 instead of 225, things worked out alright.

School
System Programming - Midterm seemed ok. Going to review tonight's lecture notes sometime
Data Structures - Everything's good.
Java - Need to read the last lecture's notes tonight.
Digital Design - Need to read the textbook.
Statistics - Will need to practice some questions

Training Notes
Fine session, I failed my attempts to PR on squat, though I learned a bunch in the process.
My first two were forward a bit, and on the last I needed to maintain tension throughout the descent. The most important thing I learned was that I need to squat heavy more often and regulate my squat form regardless of weight.

Great reddit post on circumcision

The vast majority of medical organizations in the world with a policy on circumcision are outright against it. including:
Swedish Pediatric Society

(they outright call for a ban) Royal Dutch Medical Association

calls it a violation of human rights, and calls for a "strong policy of deterrence." this policy itself has been endorsed by several other organizations, including: The Netherlands Society of General Practitioners,
The Netherlands Society of Youth Healthcare Physicians,
The Netherlands Association of Paediatric Surgeons,
The Netherlands Association of Plastic Surgeons,
The Netherlands Association for Paediatric Medicine,
The Netherlands Urology Association, and
The Netherlands Surgeons’ Association.
They recently held a symposium

this past June to evaluate whether to ban it. one of the speakers is a man who did a recent study showing a decrease in sexual sensation in circumcised men, and an increase in sexual difficulties for them as well. British Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons

This procedure should be delayed to a later date when the child can make his own informed decision. Parental preference alone does not justify a non‐therapeutic procedure.... Advise parents that the current medical consensus is that routine infant male circumcision is not a recommended procedure; it is non‐therapeutic and has no medical prophylactic basis; it is a cosmetic surgical procedure; current evidence indicates that previously‐thought prophylactic public health benefits do not out‐weigh the potential risks..... Routine infant male circumcision does cause pain and permanent loss of healthy tissue. |
Australian Federation of Aids organizations

They state that circumcision has "no role" in the HIV epidemic. The German Association of Pediatricians

called for a ban recently. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan

has taken a position against it, saying it is harmful and will likely be considered illegal in the future, given the number of men who are angry that it was done to them and are becoming activists against it. The President of the Saskatchewan Medical Association has said the same (link above).
The Central Union for Child Welfare

“considers that circumcision of boys that violates the personal integrity of the boys is not acceptable unless it is done for medical reasons to treat an illness. The basis for the measures of a society must be an unconditional respect for the bodily integrity of an under-aged person… Circumcision can only be allowed to independent major persons, both women and men, after it has been ascertained that the person in question wants it of his or her own free will and he or she has not been subjected to pressure.” Swedish Association for Sexuality Education published this guide

that talks about circumcision, in a pretty negative way. not an official advocacy policy but it makes it fairly clear. it also mentions the frenulum is sexually sensitive, and helps prevent infection by blocking fluid from the urethra; the frenulum is often removed in an infant circumcision, yet easier to leave intact if an adult is circumcised. Royal College of Surgeons of England

"The one absolute indication for circumcision is scarring of the opening of the foreskin making it non- retractable (pathological phimosis). This is unusual before five years of age."..."The parents and, when competent, the child, must be made fully aware of the implications of this operation as it is a non-reversible procedure." |
British Medical Association

it is now widely accepted, including by the BMA, that this surgical procedure has medical and psychological risks. .... very similar arguments are also used to try and justify very harmful cultural procedures, such as female genital mutilation or ritual scarification. Furthermore, the harm of denying a person the opportunity to choose not to be circumcised must also be taken into account, together with the damage that can be done to the individual’s relationship with his parents and the medical profession if he feels harmed by the procedure. .... parental preference alone is not sufficient justification for performing a surgical procedure on a child. .... The BMA considers that the evidence concerning health benefit from non-therapeutic circumcision is insufficient for this alone to be a justification for doing it. |
Australian Medical Association

Has a policy of discouraging it, ad says "The Australian College of Paediatrics should continue to discourage the practice of circumcision in newborns." Australian College of Paediatrics

:
"The possibility that routine circumcision may contravene human rights has been raised because circumcision is performed on a minor and is without proven medical benefit. Whether these legal concerns are valid will probably only be known if the matter is determined in a court of law .....Neonatal male circumcision has no medical indication. It is a traumatic procedure performed without anaesthesia to remove a normal and healthy prepuce."|
I love that statement about human rights. It says that the only way to determine the validity is to ask the courts. As if it's not the job of a medical organization to take a stand as well.
Royal Australasian College of Physicians

Some men strongly resent having been circumcised as infants. There has been increasing interest in this problem, evidenced by the number of surgical and non-surgical techniques for recreation of the foreskin.|
ON that note, {74% of Australian doctors overall believe circumcision should not be offered, and 51% consider it abuse](http://www.australiandoctor.com.au/news/latest-news/strong-opposition-to-newborn-circumcision

). Circumcision used to be common in Australia, but the movement against it spread faster there than America, where rates continue to drop. A letter by the South African Medical Association

said this:
The matter was discussed by the members of the Human Rights, Law & Ethics Committee at their previous meeting and they agreed with the content of the letter by NOCIRC SA. The Committee stated that it was unethical and illegal to perform circumcision on infant boys in this instance. In particular, the Committee expressed serious concern that not enough scientifically-based evidence was available to confirm that circumcisions prevented HIV contraction and that the public at large was influenced by incorrect and misrepresented information. The Committee reiterated its view that it did not support circumcision to prevent HIV transmission. We trust that you will find this in order. Yours faithfully Ms Ulundi Behrtel|
Royal Australasian College of Surgeons

I like this one especially. It's a detailed evaluation of the arguments in favor of circumcision, They note that during one of the recent trials in Africa, the researchers claimed there was no loss of sexual satisfaction, when in fact there was. But the RACS called them out:
"Despite uncircumcised men reporting greater sexual satisfaction, which was statistically significant, Kigozi et al (2008) concluded that adult male circumcision does not adversely affect sexual satisfaction or clinically significant function in men." In general, they discuss how there's no evidence to support it.
The Norwegian Council of Medical Ethics

states that ritual circumcision of boys is not consistent with important principles of medical ethics, that it is without medical value, and should not be paid for with public funds. The Norwegian Children’s Ombudsman

is opposed as well. The Denmark National Council for Children is also opposed.

And recently, the politically appointed Health minister of Norway opposed a ban on circumcision, the fact that the ban was supported by the Norwegian Medical Association, the Norwegian Nurses Organization, the Norwegian Ombudsman for Children, and the University of Oslo.

this study

shows significant harms to men's sexual ability and satisfaction after circumcision. Here's a page

from an activist site that has a short list of some organizations as well, with a few other details. most I already listed though.

Good training session, left early to eat before class. Things are moving along well. Today's training was ok, I should've done my full sets of close grip bench press. Since I do pause squats 3 days a week on this program, I'm going to make wednesday purely regular squats. I will also raise some of the paused bench weights

Facebook status from earlier:

To people that steal my damn weights in the gym. It's not hard to ask, I'm standing within 7 feet of you. Every time I come to a new piece of equipment, I organize everything there. I then gather any missing plates that I need. I've done the same thing since I moved on from the whole in the wall at STA. The rack I'm using is not for you to take whatever you need. That is what weight trees are for. And one more thing, if I let you go(which usually means you scampered off like a scared squirrel), at the very LEAST have the decency and respect for gym etiquette to put your damn weights away. No matter how new you are to the gym(like the ass who tried to steal Phil's belt) your parents surely taught you to clean up after your damn self.
To be clear, they are not "MY" weights, though if they are on the rack or machine I'm using, it is expected that you ask before taking them, as it can often be assumed that I searched for and gathered them.

Training Notes
Good day, didn't have time for everything, still had a solid session. I felt like having some fun , so we trained in our singlets today. I did wonderful on my first stats midterm, and nearly failed my system programming midterm. The class is very boring and the concepts are not explained well. It's the last class I pay any attention to, so it's expected. Currently, Stats, Java, and Data Structures are doing well, System Programming is doing poorly, and Digital Design is ok on paper, but I'm still not good with the material. On the extra curricular front, training is doing well, though I have no specific goals. My reading folders for online things are at:
Lifting Articles 132
Nutrition Articles 39
Coaching/Business 92
Misc 73
Currently Reading 8
and my books in pdf form to read are basically gathering dust. I will probably never take those notes of Power to the People like I meant to. Finally the only physical book I want to read currently, Fall of Giants, has sat for so long it has has actual dust, haha.

Updated Training Outline

Monday:
Pause Squat
(I want my squat work to be above 250 lbs (65% of 385), and feel some paused work will benefit my hips and my squat strength. I also don't need form work right now. I will be keeping the rep scheme the same, but gradually increasing weight on these)
255+ x2-3x5
Bench Press
(Dynamic Bench work)
165+ x3x3
185+ x3x3
Banded Close Grip Bench Press
Same stuff as HERC
Deadlift
(Hepburn Routine B (8 doubles -> 8 triples, I'll increase by 2 reps a week) which takes care of both volume and actual intensity)
365+ x2x8
RDLs
(Strengthen hips and hamstrings)
275x5x3
Rows
(Just however we decide)

Wednesday:
Squat
(Heavy regular squatting for the week, gradually increasing doubles and maybe triples weight. Reps will probably stay the same.)
315+ x2x2
275x3x3
Paused Bench
(Time to practice and prepare for competitions next year, as well as increase strength. I will probably start light on these, and break through these target weights sometime in November. Rep ranges will remain stagnant)
up to 195x2x2
up to 185x3x3
Banded Close Grip Bench Press
(Dem Triceps. Straight forward, bench work targeting triceps. I may begin to pause these as well, rep range will remain)
165b+ x3x5
Deadlift
(speed deadlift)
225x5x2
Pendlay Row
(More upper back work, more for hypertrophy, since I want a proper back. Unsure on what weight I'll actually use)
185?x8x3
OR
Incline Press
?x3x5

Friday:
Deadlift
speed pulls/ volume work
Same as HERC, One heavy single, then rep work starting at 5x5
Paused Squat
(same as Monday, weights will progress, rep range stay the same or drop a few sets)
255+ x2x6

BTNPP
(To have something heavy overhead, and push shoulders while fresh, no weight or rep changes to this)
135 x2x2
Military Press
(More shoulder work and more pressing are currently needed. will gradually increase weight here)
95+ x3x5
Barbell Row
(Back Work, first some heavy stuff for strength, then some volume, weights undecided. I will probably use straps on these)
?x3x3
?x8x3
Face Pulls, Curls
(Extra stuff, Bench stability, Shoulder health)

Weekend Session:
Pause Squat
(Just warmup)
Warmup to 275
Concentric (Bottom Position) Anderson Squats
(Should be fun, work with some heavy squats, I think these will give me some experience and garner some better skill at squatting heavy weight. I decided to do these (well, try them, I may still change) concentric only since we don't have boxes of various sizes at the university gym, and deloading the weight onto the pins and then starting from there is incredibly difficult. I figure I might as well just do the concentric portions, and get used to starting off the pins as I lower them. This may prove overly easy after our squat lockout work, so we'll see.)(Height 10 is where the difficulty starts.)
405 or 410 or 420 x1x1-2
Pause Squat
(I'll be increasing the volume AND weight of these)
225x2x3 +
Good Mornings
(Some volume on my posterior chain, probably just one set, no weight changing here)
155x10x1-2
Front Squats
(These will help me work towards a midsection as strong as Louie Simmons (hopefully), but since my last few attempts at learning them have been brief and poor, I'm going to try a lower-rep approach. I'll start with form work with the bar and light weights for triples, then gradually make these into a movement I'm proficient in, still at low rep ranges. I primarily want them to increase stability and strengthen my core, as I'm confident my quad strength is not an issue)(starting at 95 and increasing as form continues to hold.)
95+ x3x5
Military Press
(First some heavy singles, then 5x5 for strength, will only increase weight when this gets really easy)
125x1x2
95x5x5
Hip Thrusts
(Actual posterior chain strength work, weight undecided)
?x5x3
T-Bar Rows
(Free-weight rowing that doesn't involve a bar on my sweat pants, done for back volume and hypertrophy, weight progresses as needed.)
100+ x8x4
Dips
(For building triceps)
As many sets as needed, 50, add 5 more per week
BWx50+
Maybe interval running, or another form of cardio (Maybe, but knowing myself, unlikely)

Good session. Deadlifts were light as hell. Now, time to get to work. Also, as it's been a long time since I did 531, I will be making a new log in the private section. Pendlay rows were different compared to the style I did over the summer. I don't think I ever videoed them, though my pendlay rows over the summer were sumo stance and no momentum (so very 'pure' row style) and my current Pendlay rows are conventional stance with an initial deadlift pull into the actual row (very explosive).

Still haven't made the video from monday's training, I'll get to that later, and then finish my Java program for tomorrow, that just has some logic error(s). Then plow through some reading, and possibly start on a lab due next week.

Today's training went well, though HERC410 was having some strange pain in his left shoulder, which effected deadlifting. I felt a weird pain in my hip capsule area after beginning squats, and that's about all to be said.

Training Notes
Video coming later.
I'm typing this up from System Programming class, where my quiet prof is teaching us about shells, shell scripts, and shell commands. In the past 3 lectures, I'd be amazed if I paid him full attention for 5 minutes, sitting in the back with bad hearing and a quiet prof is not exactly a good recipe. First I must finish the Data Structures lab due tomorrow (Everything is done except the final portion of the code and testing). After that, my Java assignment for Thursday, which I haven't started, and then reading up to current on System Programming. But enough on that. After listening to the most recent episode of the EFS podcast, I've resolved to begin including more details in my training log and blog, as well as personal thoughts. The key portion of the podcast I'm referring to is where Dave Tate spoke of how he recorded more than just numbers in his old training logs.

At the current time in training, HERC410 and I are finally embarking on our new cycle for real. We've taken what we already had, did some adjusting on Klokov Press, and are replacing our deadlift training with the Hepburn-esque routine I used over the summer. If I think of anything else to add, I'll edit this post or append it to the next training log post.
